London 1989 Michel is an undercover PLO operative hooked on painkillers and posing as a student. He is tasked by mentor Abu Leila to find a venue for secret Palestinian–Israeli talks. But fellow student Helen, forbidden fruit in this clandestine world, is proving to be a distraction.
Michel is forced to go on the run when he takes possession of a package smuggled out of the Occupied Territories and linked to an assassination in Berlin – a package that both the Israelis and the Palestinians are desperate to get hold of.
From the streets of London, Cambridge and Berlin, to the remotest areas of Scotland, Michel must use his KGB training and Helen’s help to shake off his pursuers and stay one step ahead.

"Shake Off" (SO) is the second of Mischa Hiller's two novels. SO is about a young Palestinian man who was recruited some years ago by Abu Leila, following the murder of Michel's parents in a refugee camp. Abu has seen to Michel's training, both in spycraft and languages for which Michel has a natural talent. His training and early assignments lead him to Berlin, Moscow, and other capitals. Finally, he settles in a London bedsit awaiting his next assignment. He quickly meets the girl next door, a doll, to whom he is strongly attracted. He has been trained to limit his romances to no more than a week, but Helen is something else. And then there are assignments, and slip-ups, and the competition. Following a surprise assassination, Michele is on the run, and there is a betrayal - whom can he trust? Who is it that he really works for? An excellent novel, one of the better spy novels I have read in the last five years. I look forward to more from Hiller.Product details

Shake Off eBook Mischa Hiller Reviews
Fair plot, too much dependence details of sex activity, with minor characters poorly developed. Ending not entirely consistent with rest of story.
Interesting to read how the effects of a refugee camp impacted this man - exciting read, never knowing where the twists of this novel would go
Thrillers are a guilty pleasure of mine, but this one was original and intelligent. If you get your information on the middle east conflict strictly from the news media, you'll be surprised that it is not exclusively a Jewish-Muslim problem.
a thriller with the central character a young palestinian man, who was orphaned at an early age. at times it approaches "literature", as it is quite well-written.....perhaps if the central character had been more interesting and not so traumatised it would have merited 5 stars
Great read couldn,t put it down
Misha Hiller has pulled off a very good spy story with excellent writing. While I suspected which way it was going, he still managed to make me doubt my analysis. The romance and sex scenes were realistic without being overly graphic. He let our imaginations fill in the blanks. I much prefer that method rather than detailing every sigh and grope action. I'll leave that to "All the Shades of Gray", which got downright silly after awhile.
Even when I got to the end, which I thought was an adult way of finishing the story, I still wasn't sure what the real gut feelings were of the author. He took the Israeli-Palestinean conflict and made it human. Hats off to him. I hope he writes more books and I look forward to reading them.

I started reading this book after trudging through two terrible books so maybe the contrast of competent writing in Shake Off made it seem epic but I really did enjoy it. I thought the main character was well developed and while his back story was meant to be somewhat mysterious, with fragments being revealed bit by bit, it became clear fairly early what had happened to him. The same goes for the plot twist at the end, it was fairly obvious well before the big reveal what was going to happen. For those less stunning pieces I took a star away from the review. Overall the writing was very good, the story well paced and I really did enjoy it. However the twists and turns were more or less predictable. Yet there is something really good in this book, the explanation of spy craft, the authentic feeling (not dramatized hollywood james bond) of an espionage agent in a foreign country was well done. I think this book is well worth a read and would recommend it.
